This is the airfield I watched everyday as I wrote Beneath the surface (of language). The smallest detail started to take on significance as each day, and each time of day, shifted the view in front of me. It is striking the way a potentially barren landscape takes on meaning far beyond what at first appears to the eye. The photographs are a flawed reminder of the world, yet good enough to do their job. In exhibition they contextualize the map (see below). In my life they remind me of an intense two weeks of looking and writing.

Rock Graffiti, Wendover, Utah, 2009, 23″h x 40.5″w

A composite showing images of rock graffiti found along Interstate 80, which runs due east/west through Utah into Nevada. The messages are left by passersby in the median strips and shoulders of the highway, spelled out using local rock and chunks of broken asphalt. My image Ha Ha Ha, Utah (above) documents my impromptu addition to the others.
